It’s 5 a.m.

This poem, written on February 6, 2010, is based upon a Poetic Asides prompt—A Backwards Poem. It is about someone near and dear to me.

It’s 5 a.m.

Next door the lights turn on.
Neighbors walk through
their homes to begin
their morning routines.

While the neighbors’ coffee perks
he swallows melatonin to
encourage sleep. He awaits
the dawning of his dreams.
